Free junk removal in Los Angeles exists. It just comes with trade-offs in time, effort and what gets accepted. Here are the options that actually work, starting with the most useful.
1. City bulky-item pickup (free for residents)
If your trash is collected by LA Sanitation (most single-family homes and small apartment buildings in the City of Los Angeles), you can book a free bulky-item pickup through MyLA311 online, in the app, or by calling 311. You put the items at the curb for your scheduled day.
Neighboring cities such as Santa Monica, Culver City, Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Inglewood run their own programs with their own rules. Check your city’s website or your trash hauler.
Best for: people with time to wait who can move items to the curb. More details in our LA bulky-item pickup guide.
2. Charity donation pickup
Several charities pick up furniture and household goods for free if items are in good, resellable condition. Policies change and vary by location, so call ahead. See our full furniture donation pickup guide.
Best for: clean, undamaged furniture and appliances.
3. Give it away online
Neighborhood groups, Buy Nothing groups and free listings on marketplace apps move furniture fast in LA. Price it at $0 and someone will often pick it up the same day.
Best for: usable items, when you can coordinate a pickup.
4. Retailer take-back programs
Buying a new mattress or appliance? Ask about haul-away of the old one at delivery. In California, mattress retailers generally offer to take back a used mattress when they deliver a new one. Some appliance retailers do the same, sometimes for a small fee.
5. Mattress recycling drop-off
California’s Bye Bye Mattress program lets you drop off mattresses and box springs for free at participating collection sites. You’ll need a way to transport the mattress. See our mattress disposal guide.
6. E-waste and scrap metal recycling
Electronics can’t go in the trash in California, but many e-waste recyclers accept them free. Scrap yards may even pay you for appliances and metal.
7. Household hazardous waste events
Paint, chemicals and batteries aren’t accepted by junk haulers or bulky-item pickup. LA County and the City of LA run free household hazardous waste drop-off centers and collection events.
When free junk removal isn’t worth it
Free options usually mean waiting days or weeks, doing the lifting yourself, and having items rejected for wear or stains. They don’t work well when:
- You’re moving out and need the place empty today
- Items are upstairs, in the attic or in the backyard
- You have a large volume (a garage or estate cleanout)
- Items are damaged and charities won’t take them
- Your HOA or building doesn’t allow curbside piles
That’s when a professional junk removal company pays for itself. Blaze offers same-day pickup across West LA and the South Bay, with single items starting around $129, and we donate and recycle everything we can. See pricing or get a free quote.
