Los Angeles Bulky Item Pickup Guide: City Programs vs. Junk Removal

How free bulky-item pickup works in Los Angeles and the South Bay, what it accepts, and when a junk removal service makes more sense.

  • Same-day pickup
  • Upfront price, never hourly
  • Donate & recycle first

Most cities in Los Angeles County offer free bulky-item collection for residents. It’s a great service, but the rules depend on where you live. Here’s how it works across West LA and the South Bay.

City of Los Angeles (LA Sanitation)

If LA Sanitation collects your trash (most single-family homes and small multi-family buildings in the City of LA), you can book free bulky-item pickup:

  1. Book through MyLA311 online, in the app, or by calling 311.
  2. Set items out at the curb by your scheduled collection day, following the placement instructions you receive.
  3. Wait for pickup. Collection is usually scheduled several days to a couple of weeks out.

City of LA neighborhoods in our area include Venice, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista, Pacific Palisades, Westchester, Harbor City and San Pedro. Large apartment complexes often use private haulers instead, so check with your building manager.

Other cities run their own programs

These cities manage their own trash service or hauler contracts, each with its own bulky-item rules, limits and scheduling:

  • Westside: Santa Monica, Culver City, Malibu
  • South Bay: Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Inglewood, Lomita, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes

Unincorporated areas like Marina del Rey and Topanga follow LA County rules and the hauler that serves the area.

Check your city’s public works or sanitation page, or the name printed on your trash bins.

What bulky-item pickup usually accepts

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Appliances (some programs require refrigerant removal or special handling)
  • Large toys, exercise equipment and carpet (bundled)

What it usually doesn’t accept

  • Construction and remodel debris
  • Hazardous waste: paint, chemicals, batteries, propane
  • Electronics in some programs (taken separately as e-waste)
  • Loose bags of junk
  • Items left without a booking

When a junk removal service makes more sense

City pickup is free, but it isn’t right for every situation. Consider a junk removal company like Blaze when:

  • You need items gone today, for example on move-out day, before a sale or before guests arrive
  • Items are inside, upstairs or in the backyard and you can’t move them to the curb
  • You have more items than the city allows, or a full garage or estate cleanout
  • Your apartment, condo or HOA doesn’t allow curbside piles
  • You have remodel debris the city won’t take

Blaze offers same-day bulk item pickup across West LA and the South Bay with upfront pricing. Get a free quote.
